UNDER THE SUN is Doug Aitken’s first major exhibition in India — and one of the first large-scale presentations of a leading contemporary Western artist in the country. Developed through years of exchange between Mumbai and the artist's studio, and creative communities across India, the exhibition brings together sculpture, textiles, light, sound, and film to create something entirely new.
Across three floors — Past, Present, and Future — Aitken explores the links between tradition and technology, the handmade and the digital. Hand-embroidered textiles inspired by India’s river systems, wooden sculptures shaped from indigenous woods, and an immersive kaleidoscopic film environment reflect the landscapes, memories, and ideas shared between India and the West.
NEW ERA, Aitken’s acclaimed film installation tracing the story of the world’s first cellphone call and its inventor, Martin Cooper. Presented within a mirrored chamber, the work becomes an infinite environment of light and reflection — a meditation on communication, connection, and the technologies that shape modern life.
At the exhibition’s conclusion, the new light installation LIGHTFALL / OTHER WORLDS rises like a living, breathing core of illumination — a sculptural instrument consisting of light and sound in which art, performance, and technology merge.
